Description: This 2-day seminar will teach the practitioner the skills they need to implement trigger point needling, also known as dry needling. To gain solid ability in using dry needling and treating trigger points, the practitioner must have the ability to palpate, locate trigger points, and needle properly. This seminar will cover the above core skills necessary to practice dry needling and trigger point acupuncture. On the second day, simple yet effective treatments will be taught for common conditions of the head, neck, and shoulder, including the pain referral patterns, so the practitioner can start implementing these effective skills right away.
Objectives:
- Understand anatomy involved with trigger point and dry needling
- Ability to perform palpation and identify tissues
- Understand why palpation is critical to proper needling
- Understand needling principles: Using correct needle size, depths, types and purpose of stimulation, and safety
- Understand needle technique: depth, manipulation, needling safely
- Learn tactile skills for feeling different tissue types with the needle
- Learn how to apply dry needling to treat specific conditions:
- Pain pattern referrals
- Shoulder pain
- Neck pain
- Headaches

9:00-9:15am: Overview of class; what will be covered, expectations
9:15am-10:15am: Review of anatomy involved with dry needling: Fascia, subcutaneous, muscle, taut bands, trigger point anatomy
10:15am-10:45am: Updated concepts in dry needling; theories in necessity of twitch response, effects of Trp needling; anatomy and physiology of trigger points, causes & perpetuating factors
10:45am-11:15am: Palpation principles, purpose, what to feel for, how to palpate
11:15am-11:30am: Palpation demo
11:30am-12:00pm: Palpation practice
12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch
1:00pm-1:30pm: Needling principles: size, depth, angles, clock/redirecting, pistoning (can have needling videos embedded in the slide show as well); getting the twitch, tricks of the trade
1:30pm-2:00pm: Cautions & Contraindications, over-treatment/excess stimulation, patient types that respond well versus easily overstimulated; treatment expectations, soreness, patient management
2:00pm-2:15pm: Demo of needling including palpation and locating trigger points
2:15pm-2:45pm: Palpation and needling practice: locating Trps and needling them
2:45-3:15pm: Needling demo 2: locating and needling more trigger points

Seminar cancellation/refund policy:
- For cancellations 30 days or more before the symposium, a credit will be issued, less a $50 administration fee. Credit must be used within 12 months of the date of the Symposium
- Cancellations within 30 days or less of the seminar: No refunds or credits
- Cancellation due to COVID: This would occur only if National, State/Provincial, or local government prevented the event from taking place and forced us to cancel the seminar. For example, due to a shut down or national travel ban. In these cases, refunds will be issued.
About the instructor and assistant:
Dr. Jamie Hampton, DAOM
Dr. Hampton is a doctoral graduate of The American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the oldest TCM school in the US. She has worked in leading San Francisco Bay Area hospitals for the last 18 years with an emphasis on true integration and collaboration within fast paced clinical settings including the ICU. While she was an adjunct professor through University of California, San Francisco she also had the privilege of teaching grand rounds to medical students. This experience blossomed into a faculty position at the Acupuncture and Integrative Medical College in Berkeley, CA where she taught advanced needling technique, gynecology and advanced formula writing through 2018. This solidified her love of teaching and connecting with her students, conveying the power of TCM and all its abilities. Dr. Hampton was also co-founder of Golden Leaf Acupuncture in Berkeley, CA which was University California Berkeley’s leading provider for students as well as faculty and staff. Currently Dr. Hampton is in private practice, specializing in orthopedics and pelvic floor Acupuncture. She has been practicing trigger point dry needling since 2006.
Dr. Hampton teaches Pelvic Floor Acupuncture and Trigger Point Dry Needling through ASE Seminars LLC.
Sergio Hernandez, MSc., PT
A certified dry needling instructor, physical therapy instructor, athletic trainer, and physiotherapist, Sergio has taught dry needling to over 1000 students throughout Mexico. Sergio completed the Myopian Dry Needling seminar series. In addition to needling, Sergio has been a trainer for the National Team for Mexico in the Olympics as well as for various athletes in different sports. He currently maintains a physiotherapy practice in Mexico.
